Tax Season Has Kept Us Busy, and We're Only Getting Started

July came and went in a blur of tax returns. Here is what we have learnt so far this season, and why accuracy matters more than speed.

July came and went, and if we're being honest, we barely had time to notice.

One of the biggest things keeping us busy at EasyComply has been tax season.

And now that we're well into August, the pace hasn't slowed down. If anything, it's picking up.

For the next few months, we'll be spending a lot of our time helping individuals get their tax affairs in order, working through documents, answering questions, checking figures and making sure that their tax returns are submitted correctly.

Because there's one thing we've been saying a lot this tax season:

It's not just about submitting your tax return. It's about submitting an accurate one.

Tax season is officially in full swing

Every year, tax season brings the same familiar questions.

  • "What documents do I need?"
  • "Can I claim this?"
  • "Why does my IRP5 say this?"
  • "Do I need to declare this income?"
  • "I've received an auto-assessment. Do I just accept it?"

And sometimes, the answer isn't as straightforward as we'd like it to be.

That's where we've been spending a lot of our time this year.

We're not simply taking information, putting numbers into a tax return and clicking submit. We're taking the time to look at the information, understand the individual's circumstances and make sure that what is being submitted to SARS actually makes sense.

Getting it right matters

A tax return can be submitted quickly.

Getting it right can take a little more work.

It's easy to overlook something when you're completing your own return, especially when you're not familiar with the terminology or aren't sure what SARS expects.

Perhaps you have a retirement annuity contribution that needs to be considered. Maybe you have medical expenses. Perhaps you changed jobs during the year, had more than one IRP5, earned additional income or simply aren't sure whether a particular amount needs to be declared.

These are the sorts of things we're working through with clients every day.

And sometimes, the review is just as important as the submission.

We'd much rather identify an issue before a return is submitted than have someone discover it later when SARS asks questions.

Don't automatically accept your auto-assessment

One of the things that has also stood out this year is how important it is to review your SARS auto-assessment.

SARS uses information it receives from third parties such as employers, banks, medical schemes, retirement funds and insurers to prepare an auto-assessment.

That's incredibly convenient.

But convenient doesn't necessarily mean you should simply accept the result without looking at it.

If something is missing or incorrect, you need to address it.

SARS itself advises taxpayers to review their auto-assessment carefully and check that the information is correct before taking action.

That's exactly where a second set of eyes can be useful.

Know your 2026 tax season dates

TaxpayerFiling period
Auto-assessments1 July to 12 July 2026
Non-provisional individuals13 July to 23 October 2026
Provisional taxpayers13 July 2026 to 22 January 2027
Trusts19 September 2026 to 22 January 2027

The auto-assessment period has already concluded, but if you received an auto-assessment, it's still important to review the outcome and take the appropriate action if the information is incorrect.

For most non-provisional individual taxpayers, the deadline is 23 October 2026. Provisional taxpayers have until 22 January 2027 to submit electronically.

You can find the latest filing information on the SARS filing season page.

August is here, and there's still time

The good news is that we're not at the end of tax season yet.

There's still time to get your affairs in order.

But that doesn't mean you should leave it until October.

The earlier you start, the more time you have to find missing documents, resolve discrepancies and deal with anything that needs attention before submitting your return.

That's particularly important if your tax affairs aren't completely straightforward.

What has kept us busy at EasyComply?

Quite simply, people.

People who aren't sure whether they've included everything.

People who don't understand why their tax calculation looks the way it does.

People who would rather have someone check their return before they submit it.

And people who simply don't have the time or the desire to navigate the process themselves.

That's what we enjoy about this part of the year.

Yes, tax season can be hectic. There are plenty of deadlines, documents and numbers flying around.

But helping someone understand their tax position and giving them confidence that their return has been properly reviewed makes the busy season worthwhile.

Don't just submit. Submit accurately.

If there's one message we'd like to leave you with this tax season, it's this:

Don't treat your tax return as a formality.

Take the time to make sure the information is complete and accurate. Keep your supporting documents. Check your tax certificates. And if you're unsure about something, ask.

You don't have to figure it all out yourself.

At EasyComply, we're here throughout tax season to help individuals navigate the process, from understanding their documents to reviewing their information and submitting their returns.

July kept us busy.

August is proving to be just as busy.

And with tax season continuing into October, and even January for provisional taxpayers, we've still got a lot of tax returns to work through.

So, if you haven't done yours yet, now is probably a good time to start.
